No, they are not the same, even though many people use the terms interchangeably.  According to Wikipedia, “Search engine marketing is a form of Internet marketing that involved the promotion of websites by increasing their visibility in search engine results pages (SERPS) through optimization and advertising.” SEM includes SEO tactics, as well as several other search marketing tactics.

Search engines basically look at three things when evaluating a website and deciding where to rank it – PROMINENCE, RELEVANCE and TRUST. SEO is all about increasing these factors on an on-going basis.

Can anyone guarantee first page rankings?

There is ultimately no guarantee exactly where the website will rank, but someone’s practice is on the first page.  By doing the right SEO work, at the correct pace, and in the proper manner, we expect great results for your website.

How long does it take to see results?

These are links done offsite that signal search engines to the targeted website. There is alot that goes into backlinking safely. The days of mass link building and black hat SEO are over. How often does Google update it’s algorithms?

Google does not give direct answers to this, but every few months a major algorithm update seems to occur. In between, many small updates consistently appear.
